European Commission
The Competition Authority is the Ireland's representative for consultations by the European Commission relating to competition enforcement cases and initiatives in European Union competition law and policy.
We fulfil this role by attending decision-making and other meetings as well as making written and oral contributions to policy and case analyses.
European Competition Law Enforcement
Before adopting a decision, for example relating to an abuse of dominance or a proposed merger, the Commission is required to ask each Member State for its opinion through Advisory Committees.
We do not attend all meetings but focus on those cases that have an impact on Irish consumers.
European Competition Law and Policy
The Commission consults with Member States on proposed enforcement practices, guidance, policies and legislation relating to European Union competition law and policy.
We attend meetings that encourage the consistent and efficient application of European Union competition law.

European Merger Review
The heads of European national competition authorities and the European Commission agreed a set of best practices entitled
Best Practices on Co-operation between EU National Competition Authorities in Merger Review
. The best practices aim to foster co-operation and sharing of information between national competition authorities in the European Union, for mergers that do not qualify for review by the Commission but require clearance in several member states.
